Course Outline Speaking I and Reading III Update



SPEAKING I
First Semester, English Department

LEARNING OUTCOMES
            At the end of this program, students are able to perform speaking competencies for daily communications with specific emphases on performative,  functional, and informational functions in academic and community environments.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  1. Given exposures on daily communications in English, students will be able to demonstrate daily interactions in English with confidence for performative stances.
  2. Given exposures on various contexts of formal or informal circumstances, students will be able to use daily conversations to fill their needs for communications.
  3. Given practices on various contexts of conversations, students are able to apply their speaking competencies for infomational uses.

CONTENTS
  1. Performative discourses:  introducing oneself, individual background, vitae, school, daily activities, family, hometown, most impressed experiences; dialogues, reports, presentation, short speeches.
  2. Functional discourses:  asking information, explaining topics, discussion, comments, master of ceremony, short speeches.
  3. Informational discourses:  explaining topics from written texts, explaining topics from lectures, description, discussion, speech.

ACTIVITIES
            Students should actively participate on the contexts of conversation in every meeting individually or in groups.  Lecturer gives exposures for various focuses and students demonstrate their oral performance giving responses, comments, creativities, and follow up of the contents.  Web or internet-based assignment may take place complimentary to the core materials.

EVALUATION
            Evaluation will be made on the basis of process-based approach.  Each meeting is evaluated and each student participating in the topics and activities is graded.  No specific evaluation will be conducted; mid-test and final test are excluded.

READING III

LEARNING OUTCOMES
            At the end of this program, students are able to implement academic literacy skill in reading including literal, inferential, and critical comprehension for academic discourses.  Along with the competencies on reading skills, minimum competency on vocabulary mastery including General Word List 1,000 to 2,000 and Academic Vocabulary is required.  

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  1. Given exposures on 1,000 to 2,000 General Word List, students are able to apply reading skills for literal and inferential comprehension skill.
  2. Given exercises on various discourses containing Academic Vocabulary list, students will be able to implement skill for inferential comprehension.
  3. Given practices on communication of general word list and academic vocabulary, students will be are able to apply critical comprehension skill.

CONTENTS
  1. Literal reading skills:  general word list 1,000 to 2,000.
  2. Inferential reading skills: academic vocabulary.
  3. Critical reading skills:  general word list and academic vocabulary.

READING MATERIALS
Dr. Imroatus Solikhah, M.Pd et.al (2014).  English for Academic Purposes: A Competency-Based Text Book for EFL Students. Yogyakarta: Imperium Press.

ACTIVITIES
Basic activities of this class are to review and work exercises and tasks in the  the textbook for reading materials.  Other activities will be based on the internet-based approach for discussing and submitting home assignments.

EVALUATION
  1. Midterm test.
  2. Home assignments.
  3. Final test.
